A member of South Africa’s National Assembly, Ntombovuyo Veronica Mente, has introduced a bill to amend the Liquor Act of 2003, aiming “to restrict the promotion of alcoholic products by explicitly prohibiting the use of brand elements, company names, or sponsorships at organized events.”

Mente has reportedly asked the Speaker of the Assembly to fast-track the bill’s referral to the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition. The National Assembly is the lower house of South Africa’s Parliament.

MP Mente is a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a political party that currently holds 9.8% of parliamentary seats. She served as the party’s National Chairperson from December 2019 to December 2024 and has been a member of the National Assembly since May 2014.
