On 08 December 2023, EU Regulation 2021/2117 reportedly will take effect, requiring wine sold in the European Union to provide consumers with ingredient, nutrition, energy, and allergen information. Except for the nutritional value in kilocalories and allergenic substances, which must be included on the label, producers may list information on the wine label or provide it online with a QR code.
Despite the derogations, the worries of producers, already grappling with a series of bureaucratic problems and various unknowns linked to the future (from the CMO to high stocks to reduced consumption in the main destination markets), persist. Undoubtedly the new labelling - although now unavoidable in a system that demands transparency for consumers - will entail further expenditure.
