In April 2025, Sweden’s National Food Agency released revised dietary guidelines for adults, placing a sharper emphasis on the health risks associated with alcohol. Among the updated advice: “it is good for your health to limit your alcohol intake”.
The agency’s position, outlined in the guidelines stresses that Alcohol is “detrimental to every organ of the body.” Additionally, it states that “There is compelling evidence that alcohol increases the risk of several types of cancer. Research cannot establish a “safe threshold” for when harmful health effects may occur – even small amounts of alcohol can increase the risk, particularly for breast cancer”.
Citing the Nordic Nutrition Recommendation (NNR 2023), which are based on a broad review of scientific literature, the agency concludes there are no proven health benefits from alcohol consumption. Without a scientifically established safe limit, the guidance is clear: avoid alcohol as a whole, or consume it in very small amounts.
