Ontario and Manitoba sign deal to boost interprovincial trade, including alcohol

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew have inked a new memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening interprovincial trade and labor mobility. The agreement, signed on Monday in Toronto, is designed to streamline the movement of goods and workers between the two provinces and includes provisions to expand direct to consumer alcohol sales.
The deal is part of Ontario’s broader push to dismantle internal trade barriers across Canada. Premier Ford’s government has already signed similar agreements with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and introduced legislation to eliminate all domestic trade restrictions.
Nova Scotia has already enacted a comparable law, while Prince Edward Island recently followed suit with a bill aimed at removing barriers for trade and labor mobility in jurisdictions willing to reciprocate. The move signals a growing momentum among provinces to reduce red tape and promote economic cooperation within Canada’s borders.
