A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators has written the Majority and Minority Leaders of the U.S. Senate, asking for a permanent extension of relief from existing federal excise tax rates for alcoholic beverage producers. The tax cuts, originally implemented in 2017, will expire in January 2021. The senators argue that permanent relief must be adopted by year’s end because of dramatic losses of revenue suffered by the alcohol beverage industry during the pandemic. Standalone legislation is unlikely to pass during the present Congress, but the relief extension might be appended to legislation to prevent a government shutdown or to a stimulus package for next year.
