The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), a policy body, released its “Strategy for New India @75,” a detailed report which makes wide-ranging recommendations seeking to improve that country’s health by the year 2022. Among other policy prescriptions, this study recommends the need to raise taxes on tobacco, alcohol and what it terms unhealthy foods (e.g., sodas and sugar-sweetened beverages) to improve health.
